Entry 3 - Henry
[This image is from the movie "Ghost Riders". It is used to depict Banquo's external and internal feelings. On the outside, it is evident that he has been murdered and the two sides in this image depicts the fact that Banquo is only physically put to rest and not his spiritual self. Therefore, he does not possess a human form (hence there is an image of his dissolving character). This image also suggests how Banquo feels betrayed by Macbeth's cruel deeds. The skull on the left side symbolizes hatred and betrayal. Since Macbeth has this evil act, Banquo's ghost will continue to haunt him.]

Dearest journal,

Under the weary sun I have rode all afternoon with my son Fleance. In this dark and mischievous night we have been surprised and attacked. Murdered, I was, under this cruel and hateful night. O treachery! My spirit remains restless.

My body is stained with blood, my soul is reeked with sadness

Who am I to haunt? Macbeth, the early Glamis, the old Cawdor and currently the ungrateful Scottish king. I know he has sent those murderers for his selfish goals. I understand now that it is all because of the predictions of the three witches. His egotistic desires made him lay his dirty hands upon me because he wanted his son’s to be kings not mine. Oh, I hope Fleance escaped from those sinful murderers, he’s the only hope I have.

The only beacon of light left is my son Fleance. Thou may 'st revenge.

Now that I am dead, my ghostly self has talked to the noble Duncan in his grave. Not far from suspicion, he told me Macbeth was responsible for this heartless act, not the innocent Malcolm and Donalbain. I can’t believe how much Macbeth has changed since we met the weird sisters. Since then, he has become murderous, untrustworthy, disloyal and ambitious. For his wicked deeds, he will be punished.

His banquet, I did surprise that night. My bloody and tortured human ghost attended his feast upon his command. Poor Macbeth, he seemed shocked that evening by my presence. He made a complete fool of himself as he talked to my ghost form, by which no other lords could see. Let this be a warning to him. What he has done to the gracious Duncan and myself will haunt him forever. Like me, Duncan’s ghost will continue his way to haunt Macbeth’s equally sinister wife until she is driven insane.

Upon our nightly intrusions, Duncan and I have seen the tyrant's wife sleep walk. In her sleep she talks, about the cruel deeds that they have accomplished. Some truth she did say about me, "Banquo's buried; he cannot come out one's grave." That is where she is wrong, for I must wander as an innocent soul until their means are justified. Neither of them hence forth shall sleep peacefully ever again.

The sins committed by those will eventually find their way to harm them back in unnatural ways.

I remain,

In Death,

Banquo

"Ghosts" is a rock instrumental composed by the American guitarist Joe Satriani. In my opinion, this song describes the tortures, regrets and anger dealt by a ghost. This is relevant because Banquo's ghost visits Macbeth during the banquet. Likewise, one can get a sense of the creeping and eerie atmosphere created by the ghost from listening to this song. In different parts of the song, there are high pitched notes which resemble cries of a deceived soul. This is a reminder of the way Banquo was tortured and killed (cut on the throat). When Macbeth ask the murderer about the blood, they respond by saying "Tis Banquo's then." Similarly this song also suggests that those who are murdered unjustly, can return as ghosts to complete their unfinished business.

Plight of a Murdered Ghost

Lyrics by: Henry Liu

Verse 1:

December 1st on a lonely night,

My human self walked on the street.

I turned my head, to my surprise

A gun held high, put me to sleep.

A cruel dark smile on his face,

While my existence slipped out of place.

Verse 2:

I screamed in terror beyond the light,

A solid despair none could hear.

My body lay still on the cold ground,

My face with blood and innocent tears.

Spirit of darkness devoured my soul,

Constant vengeance became my goal.

Verse 3:

In the shadows I must now remain,

Decades have passed, hatred had grew.

Day through night I monitored him,

His evil deeds would be subdued.

In his nightmares I would enter,

Till conscience is lost, hope surrendered.

Chorus:

From dawn to night

I haunt this earth,

My spirit unrest

Till my rebirth… My spirit unrest Till my rebirth…

"The Plight of a Murdered Ghost" is a song which describes a ghost getting his revenge after being the innocent victim of a cruel-hearted murderer. This deals with themes related to hatred, sadness, despair and vengeance. These are all experienced by Banquo because he was murdered in betrayal by his best friend Macbeth. The timing of this song is also relevant to Banquo's death because both characters died at night under the light (because Banquo was carrying the torches). Both texts suggest that only those who have committed the sins are able to hear the screams and plights of their murdered victim's ghosts.

This is an image which reflects Banquo's feelings after
he was murdered. His eyes are now filled with fire, signaling rage and anger towards Macbeth for sending the murderers. This flame also represents revenge, for Banquo becomes a ghost to haunt Macbeth at the banquet. The eye also shows light. This is the light of hope which Banquo has for his son Fleance to escape and become king (in order to fulfill the witches' third prophecy.

About Me

I bore the name Banquo whilst I lived and when I was fellow soldier and friend to Macbeth. I was loyal to noble Duncan who Macbeth murdered, and I too was eventually disposed of. I am now a ghost caught between Life and Death. I dearly love my son Fleance and pray he is somewhere safe.

And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray us
