The day was odd and the whole scenario seems a bit apprehensive. On our way to Duncan’s castle at Forres, we came into contact with unnatural things. Disgusting, insolent ratcatchers! They could not have been human—perhaps something supernatural, fantastical. As we approached, they recited prophecies about Macbeth, and I as well.
Macbeth’s prophecies were most peculiar.Apparently, Macbeth is somehow to become king. I’m doubtful. Macbeth can only become king under the circumstances that Duncan dies, but Duncan is as fit as a fiddle. Moreover, Malcolm, then Donalbain are in line if anything were to actually happen to Duncan. It is ridiculous and even more, impossible.
Later came a surprise. Ross and Angus notified Macbeth that he had been declared Thane of Cawdor. This was probably a coincidence. Maybe the witches were in contact with Ross or Angus before we arrived in their cave.
My own prophecies, I did not understand. “Not so happy, yet much happier.Lesser than Macbeth, and greater,Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.” How can I possibly be two things at once: happy, yet not; lesser but greater? Is my child to become king? I love Fleance with all my heart. He is a good boy, but not fit to be a king. All these things were too irrational to be true. I’m sure my mind is more skeptical than that of Macbeth’s. It’s not likely for him to pursue these things of impossible ambition. Oh, well. Our confrontation with the witches was short and childish.None of this will ever come true. I am likely to forget about everything by morrow.
I remain,
Banquo
The song “Time to Pretend” by MGMT was chosen to represent Banquo’s feelings towards prophecies and the witches. The song tells the story of people who have lost themselves in a world that they don’t know and how they miss what their life used to be. This is similar to the situation of Banquo. He believes that if he pursues the prophecies then he will lose track of reality and what is happening in the present.

Loyalty
ACT 1, Scene 3
And oftentimes, to win us to our harm,
The instruments of darkness tell us truths,
Win us with honest trifles, to betray us
In deepest consequence
